DepED Secretary Angara Visits GSSMES

Education Secretary Sonny Angara has conducted an ocular inspection of schools in Malabon and Navotas to assess the damage caused by storms Emong and Dante, which were enhanced by the southwest monsoon.

On Wednesday, Angara, accompanied by Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, Asec Joyce Andaya, Barangay Chairman Robert Bautista, OIC SDS Rustica Lorenzo and other SDO Malabon officials visited the Guillermo Sanchez Memorial School.

According to the Department of Education (DepEd) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service situation report, a total of 24,648 schools have suspended in-person classes due to these weather disturbances.

As of Wednesday, the report indicated 1,876 classrooms with minor damage, 562 with major damage, 531 totally damaged, and 232 damaged hygiene facilities.

“We will not abandon our schools, teachers, and students in the midst of calamities. We will do everything for them to quickly recover and continue providing education,” Angara said, speaking in Filipino.

DepEd has already initiated the release of funds to support cleaning and clearing operations for affected schools, in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways.
